National Song Competition

The National Festival is also proud to host Cayman’s own version of ‘American Idol’. In previous years, local artists geared up for the Cayman Island’s National Song Competition to compete for the best on island title. This year the event happening on Friday, 12 November.

A big favourite with the crowds, it brings out some of Cayman’s finest songwriters and singers and this year will be no different with a grand first prize of CI$3,000. In all there will be two other cash prizes as well as the award for People’s Choice which carries its own separate cash prize. Bringing the total to be won a whopping CI$6,000.
In the past, winners have been featured on both radio and television in the Cayman Islands after their Pirates Week success. One winner even travelled abroad to compete with other contest winners in the Caribbean.

The judges’ task will be even more difficult this year because the large cash prizes being offered is garnering much more interest even from songwriters who have in the past not paid much attention to the competition.

Sponsored by Digicel and the Caymanian Compass, the contest is open to residents of the Cayman Islands. Entries do not have to be any particular style of music, so on the night expect to hear anything from Rock and Country to Reggae and Soca. This usually makes for a very interesting evening’s entertainment.
