5K Sea Swim

The Cayman Islands, with pristine beaches and crystal clears waters, is an ideal location for open water swimming. Touted as one of the most scenic beaches in the world, the famous Seven Mile Beach is an ideal location to host the 31st annual Pirates Week 5K swim. The Pirates Week 5K is Cayman’s oldest swimming tradition and takes place on Saturday, 12 November 2011. The event combines the excitement of the Pirate’s Week festivities with a truly amazing open water experience.

The Cayman Islands are quickly becoming a formidable force in global open water swimming. Recent world famous swimmers to grace the Seven Mile Beach include Eva Fabian, Alex Meyer, Ryan Lochte, BJ Bedford, Neil Walker, Ian Crocker, Kristi Kowal, and Cayman’s own Brett and Shaune Fraser.

Pirates Week, Cayman’s National Festival, hopes to grow the brand of the 5K and this year’s race will include random prize eligibility for race finishers, medals and t-shirts. The top four male and female finishers will also receive Pirate’s Week Plaques. Refreshments and age group trophies will also be provided.

This year’s race will be a loop course starting at Governor’s Beach, at 8.30am (subject to weather conditions). Inquiries can be directed to pirates@candw.ky. Registration is on the day from 7.30am to 8.15a. and cut off time is 2½ hours.

This swim is a perfect holiday for swimmers and their families, or locals looking for a longer distance race. This year will be the best Pirates Week 5K yet!

Event sponsors include Pirates Week, Cayman’s National Festival, and the local open water governing body, Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association (CIASA), which will be setting up the event course.

Swim Meet
The Stingray Swim Club (SSC) and Fosters Food Fair will be hosting The Mike Lockwood Memorial International Swim Meet. The meet will be held from the 17 through 21 November 2010 at the Lions Aquatic Centre. The international meet hosts visiting teams traditionally from Jamaica and US but all swimmers or teams are welcome.

Pool competition gets underway Wednesday evening at 5pm with more sessions on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday mornings. This age group Swim Meet promises to be both competitive, fun and family oriented. Also, kids will have a chance to capture some real pirate booty in the form of trophies, medals and ribbons. Meet entry forms are available on the Stingray Swim Club website (www.caymanswimming.com) as well as through the Pirates Week office.

The Stingray Swim Club comes under the umbrella of the CIASA. It was established in 1996 to develop competitive age group swimming for swimmers of all ages. SSC arranges travel to away meets, promotes an incentive badge program for its swimmers, hold FINA officiating clinics and runs local pool meets.
