A fairly recent but popular addition to Pirates Week, the Festival Queen Competition, is essentially a ‘costume fashion show’ that draws hundreds of people every year. Contestants don’t have to sing, dance or answer questions; they just show up with costumes of their own designs, parade their creations before the judges, and smile as their supporters roar encouragement. The result is a glittering array of colour and excitement on the downtown street.
