CAYMANS CARDBOARD BOAT REGATTA
An event that started 3 years ago has become one of the most popular of the National Festival and commands an audience of approximately 3,000 viewers.
Just imagine – Boats made completely of cardboard, duct tape and glue, racing around Hog Sty Bay (downtown harbor cove). How do they move? Well, with lots of duct tape and propelled by paddles, oars, or sails, you name it. Some do float but in this race it can only be described as merry confusion. Okay some of the boats do sink, but that only adds to the merriment.
Popular in recent years around the world, this event came to Pirates Week for the first time in 2007 as a fund-raiser for a playground designed for special needs children, and was an instant favorite with the crowds. This year, with renewed sponsorship from the organisers and brainchild of the event, Build Cayman Ltd and co-sponsor local brewery Caybrew, the event has been expanded to include a morning race made up solely of teenagers from local high schools.
Starting at 11am for the schools race and 4pm for the main race on the final Saturday of Pirate Week, 20 November, this is absolutely one event that you cannot miss.
